James Cameron has spoken about future plans for the Avatar films during promotional activities. He said the continuation of the series depends on how Avatar: Fire and Ash performs commercially. The film is the 3rd entry in the science-fiction series.
Future Of The Series
Cameron said the next two planned instalments have not yet been confirmed. He stated, “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does.”
The director also described what would happen if later films do not proceed. He said he would publicly explain the unused story material in a formal setting.
Cameron stated, “If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference, and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do.”
Plans To Preserve The Story Material
The Avatar series began in 2009 and expanded with a second release in 2022. The third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, continues the storyline involving Jake Sully and Neytiri. It introduces additional Na’vi groups and developments on Pandora.
Cameron also spoke about preserving the wider story material beyond cinema releases. He said he would consider adapting the unused material into written form. The material includes character histories, cultural details, and extended narrative structure. This approach would provide a recorded version of the planned storyline if filming does not continue.
