Iga Swiatek booked her place in the quarter-finals with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over qualifier Maddison Inglis on Tuesday.
Inglis, ranked 168 in the world, was the last Australian left in the draw after benefiting from Naomi Osaka’s third-round withdrawal due to an abdominal injury. Inglis was unable to withstand the relentless pressure applied by the Polish world number two at Rod Laver Arena.
Swiatek, who had been taken to three sets by Anna Kalinskaya in the previous round, was far sharper this time. She struck 22 winners and dictated play from the baseline.
“I felt pretty confident from the beginning,” Swiatek said. “The pace of the ball was a lot different from my last round, so I needed to adjust with my legs and really be precise with the footwork.”
Ruthless Performance in Melbourne
The six-time Grand Slam champion raced through the opening set without dropping a game. She used her movement and heavy groundstrokes to overwhelm Inglis.
The Australian briefly lifted the home crowd by breaking serve at the start of the second set. However, Swiatek responded immediately, breaking back and restoring control. She closed out the match in one hour and 13 minutes to reach her third Australian Open quarter-final. Swiatek will next face Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina.
