Harry Maguire Gets 15-Month Suspended Sentence in Greece

A Greek court has handed Harry Maguire a 15-month suspended sentence following an incident on the island of Mykonos in August 2020.

The ruling came after a retrial in Syros on Wednesday, where the England international was found guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery.

Background to the Case

Maguire had originally been given a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days in 2020. His lawyers had immediately appealed the verdict, which under Greek law automatically annulled the original conviction and triggered a full retrial.

The case was delayed several times between 2023 and 2025 because of procedural issues, including lawyer strikes and scheduling problems in Greece’s court system.

Possible Appeal to Greece’s Supreme Court

Sources say that Maguire intends to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Civil and Criminal Court of Greece. The 32-year-old has previously rejected opportunities to settle the case out of court, insisting he wants to clear his name through the legal process.

Legal Timeline

Under Greek law, proceedings related to offences of this type must be completed within eight years, meaning the case would expire in August 2028 if not fully resolved.

Club Duties Continue

Maguire was not required to attend the hearing in person and was named in Manchester United’s squad for Wednesday’s Premier League game against Newcastle United.
