Girona FC defeated FC Barcelona 2-1 on Monday, striking late at Montilivi to secure a statement victory that shakes up the LaLiga title race.
Barcelona led early in the second half but were punished for first-half wastefulness in a dramatic derby encounter.
Barcelona Waste First-Half Dominance
Barcelona dominated the opening period and twice struck the woodwork. Raphinha hit the post before Lamine Yamal fired a penalty against the same upright in added time after Dani Olmo was fouled.
The visitors controlled territory and tempo but failed to convert their superiority into a decisive lead.
Goals In Quick Succession
The breakthrough arrived in the 59th minute when Pau Cubarsi rose to head home Jules Kounde’s cross from a short corner.
Girona responded almost immediately, levelling three minutes later as Thomas Lemar converted from close range after Vladyslav Vanat’s delivery caused confusion in the box.
Beltran Strikes Late To Seal Victory
With the derby finely poised, Girona found the decisive touch in the 87th minute. Fran Beltran steered home from Joel Roca’s pass, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Barcelona pushed for an equaliser and were handed a late advantage when Roca was sent off in stoppage time, but they could not find a breakthrough.
Title Race Implications
The defeat leaves Barcelona on 58 points, two behind Real Madrid, and marks their first run of successive defeats in all competitions since October.
