Gabon’s government has taken drastic action following a disastrous Africa Cup of Nations campaign, suspending the national team and dismissing the entire coaching staff after three straight defeats in Morocco.
Government Action
State television announced the decision after Gabon finished bottom of their group. Acting sports minister Simplice-Désiré Mamboula confirmed the measures, citing what he described as a “disgraceful performance” at the tournament.
Coaching Staff Dismissed and Key Players Dropped
The government relieved head coach Thierry Mouyouma and his backroom team of their duties with immediate effect as it moved to reset the national setup.
Senior players Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga were also excluded from the squad. Aubameyang did not feature in the final group game and has since returned to Olympique de Marseille for treatment on a thigh injury.
AFCON Failure
Gabon lost all three group matches, falling to Cameroon, Mozambique, and the Ivory Coast, ending their campaign without a point.
At 36, Aubameyang has likely played his final match for Gabon, as the Panthers face an uncertain future with the national team now suspended until further notice.
