Lagos International Theatre Festival

The Lagos International Theatre Festival held a rehearsal day at Terra Kulture on the 5th of November as preparations for its debut edition, which runs from the 10th to the 16th of November.

The festival promotes stage work across Lagos and brings more than twenty production houses together for one weekend of performances. Founded by stage and movie producer and director Bolanle Austen-Peters, the event supports tourism, builds the creative industry, and creates jobs across the theatre space.

Teams spent the day running scenes, checking timing, and aligning scripts with the festival schedule.

In an interview with HipTV, Bolanle Austen-Peters said the platform supports the growth of theatre and helps audiences see a broad mix of stories in one place. She noted, “We want a platform where all theatre performers present their work in one weekend so Nigerians enjoy the stage in one place.” She added that the festival supports talent, draws visitors into Lagos, and gives the creative economy more visibility. She said the event includes works for young audiences, bold themes for adults, cultural stories, and international groups from the United States and South Africa.

Director and performing artiste Abiola Lepe, who is involved in two of the productions, said rehearsals stayed energetic as groups built rhythm and teamwork. She explained, “We are creating an energy and a synergy so we bring you the best of Nigeria in LITF.” She added that audiences should expect strong entertainment and pride in Nigerian culture, noting, “Expect sparkle, razzle-dazzle, entertainment and a strong sense of who we are.”

Rapper and singer Olamilekan Agbeleshebioba, also known as Laycon, is part of the production of My Boyfriend Calls Me Mad, scheduled for the fifteenth of November at the Muson Centre. He said the cast is shaping the show through active rehearsals and strong teamwork. He noted, “It is going to be electrifying. Working with the cast has been fun, and the audience will have fun.” He explained that he trained at film school and works in screen acting, which led him into stage work.

Actor Tana Adelana, who leads the same production, described the play as sharp and engaging. She said, “It is witty and captivating, something that will keep you glued to your seat.” She noted that her character faces personal and social pressure and that the story carries a strong message. She added, “It is relatable, and it carries a message you take home.”

Actor and filmmaker Efe Irele said rehearsals have been lively as the team works on movement and vocals. She noted, “The title is catchy, and it says a lot about the stage play.” She said the festival gives creatives a chance to present the depth of Nigerian talent. In her words, “We need to project the talents we have and the great things we achieve.” She urged viewers to attend, calling the show energetic and relatable.
