Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82 on July 13, 2025, in London after a prolonged illness. Buhari, who first came to power as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, returned to lead Nigeria democratically in 2015 and served until 2023. He was the first opposition candidate in Nigerian history to unseat a sitting president.
During his presidency, Buhari focused on anti-corruption initiatives and combating security challenges, including the Boko Haram insurgency. His administration, however, faced economic difficulties, rising unemployment, and criticisms over human rights and handling of protests.

Following his death, President Bola Tinubu declared seven days of national mourning. Buhari was laid to rest on July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic traditions. He is survived by his wife, Aisha, and several children.
