Fans’ group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) has condemned the pricing of the 2026 World Cup tickets as “extortionate”. The group accused FIFA of abandoning the tournament’s long-standing commitment to affordability and accessibility.
The sharp increases surfaced as FIFA briefed national associations on their allocations. Standard-tier tickets for the final now cost $5,587, up from $1,000 in 2022. Premium seats have soared to $8,864, compared with $1,600 three years ago. The group-stage has also adopted variable pricing for the first time, with fixtures like England vs Croatia ranging from $265 to $700.
FSE has called for an immediate halt to the sales process, arguing that FIFA’s model betrays both the “tradition” and “universality” of the World Cup. The organisation criticised FIFA for reserving the lowest-price category for general sales under dynamic pricing. This leaves long-standing supporters with no access to affordable options through national associations.
The financial burden of following a team to the final has also surged. Attending all eight matches will now cost at least $6,950, rising to $16,400 at the highest tier. In 2022, the equivalent journey cost between $1,963 and $5,244, and involved one fewer match.
Some fans are already reconsidering their plans. England supporter Luke Buxton said the prices have made knockout-stage attendance “almost impossible,” calling the rise “a big betrayal.”
With the next ballot opening on Thursday, and resale prices expected to climb even higher, concerns are mounting that the tournament risks shutting out the very fans who help define it.
