Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton died by suicide, a coroner ruled on Thursday, the 16th of October at an inquest in Manchester, England.

Senior coroner Alison Mutch ruled that the provisional cause of death was suicide by hanging. The hearing was adjourned and is expected to resume on March 20, 2026, for a full conclusion.

Hatton’s long-time manager Paul Speak testified that he found the 46-year-old unresponsive at his residence after the boxer failed to appear for a scheduled public event.

The court also heard that the former two-weight world champion was last seen alive by family members on September 12. Known affectionately as “The Hitman,” Hatton had spoken openly in the past about his struggles with depression, alcohol misuse, and previous suicide attempts following the end of his illustrious boxing career. In interviews, he often urged others battling mental health challenges to seek help, saying in 2021: “I’ve been in very dark places. I want people to know that even tough guys can struggle.”

During his 15-year professional career, Hatton won world titles at light-welterweight and welterweight, retiring in 2012 with an impressive record of 45 wins (32 by knockout) and 3 losses. He is survived by two children, Campbell and Millie.
