Liverpool Draw With Sunderland At Anfield

Liverpool FC avoided a second consecutive home defeat after a 1-1 draw with Sunderland A.F.C. on Wednesday. Earlier on Sunday, Liverpool was able to get a 2-0 victory over West Ham United, which ended their worst run in over 70 years.

Sunderland looked eager to taste victory for the first time at Anfield since 1983. In the 67th minute, Sunderland shocked the home crowd when Chemsdine Talbi capitalised on a defensive error from Virgil van Dijk to curl a strike past the keeper and into the net.

Liverpool pushed hard for an equaliser. In the 81st minute, a strike from Florian Wirtz deflected off Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele and ended up in the net.

Sunderland came close to a late winner when striker Wilson Isidor got past the keeper in stoppage time, but a goal-line clearance from Federico Chiesa kept the draw intact.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah remained on the bench throughout the game. The Egyptian was also left out of the win over West Ham United at the weekend.

Liverpool now sits well outside the title race. After 14 league games, their campaign has unravelled with heavy losses and defensive fragility. The draw leaves Liverpool in eighth place with 22 points, while Sunderland climbs to sixth.
