Female talking drummer, Ambassador Aralola Olamuyiwa, popularly known as Ara, continues to make waves as she redefines tradition and empowers women through rhythm, heritage, and purpose.

In an exclusive chat with HIP TV, the self-styled Queen of Drums opened up about her remarkable journey, the hurdles she overcame, and her mission to inspire a new generation of women in the creative and cultural space.

When asked about breaking barriers in a male-dominated art form, Ara described her success as a divine calling.

“This is more of a calling for me. To have done this successfully and to see other female drummers coming up after me means I have the backing of Eledumare and my ancestors,” she said.

But it didn’t come easy. Ara revealed that one of her biggest challenges early on was the lack of mentorship.

“Nobody wanted to teach me. They didn’t believe a woman could handle the talking drum. I also faced the challenge of people thinking I couldn’t be both a mother and an artiste. But Eledumare has always had my back,” she shared.

She proudly recalls being recognised and honoured by top Yoruba monarchs.

“When His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, ascended the throne, he made me his first Cultural Ambassador. The Alaafin of Oyo,Baba Yeye, also honoured me at the Ayangalu Drum Festival, pronouncing me the first female talking drummer. The traditional institutions gave their blessings,” Ara said.

Beyond titles and recognition, Ara uses her platform to motivate young women to pursue their dreams with confidence and discipline. Her message to the next generation is clear and powerful.

“These days, people say, ‘What did you bring to the table?’ But the real question is, are you worthy of the invitation to the table? Because I am the table. When you develop yourself fully and walk in humility, you gain the confidence to say that. This is not just for girls in entertainment but for every woman out there. Ladies need to step up and be at the table,” she declared.
