Democratic Republic of Congo defeated Nigeria 4–3 on penalties after a tense 1–1 draw in extra time on Sunday. This eliminates the Super Eagles and advances DR CONGO to the inter-continental playoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria scored early, as Frank Onyeka capitalized on a defensive slip to score in the third minute. But Meschack Elia equalized for DR Congo in the 32nd minute, punishing a loose pass from Nigeria’s midfield to level the score.
Nigeria endured a night of wasted chances, made worse by their inability to adjust after Victor Osimhen was forced off early in the second half with an injury.
After 120 tense minutes in Rabat, neither side could find the winner, and the match went to a penalty shoot-out. In the shootout, Calvin Bassey missed the opener, Simon missed too and Semi Ajayi saw his effort saved.
For DR Congo, captain Chancel Mbemba held his nerve to convert the decisive kick, sending his team into the March inter-continental playoff.
DR Congo, meanwhile, keep their World Cup hopes alive. They now prepare to compete in the six-team inter-continental playoff scheduled for March, with a chance to reach the expanded 48-team tournament in North America.
