DJ Pretty Play has officially surpassed the Guinness World Record for the longest club DJing marathon and is now awaiting confirmation. She performed for over 300 hours at Bay Lounge in Lekki, Lagos.
The target initially set at 288 hours faced an early interruption when a power outage forced her to restart the marathon from day one.
Setback and Restart After Disqualification
Speaking with HipTV, she reflected on the first 24 hours of the marathon, which began smoothly until a power outage halted her performance and forced a shutdown.
“According to Guinness, any mistake should be fixed under ten seconds. Once it is above ten seconds, it is disqualification. That was the first challenge. We had to shut down. I started crying, but we didn’t continue that day; we had to start the next day. So that was automatic disqualification.”
Financial and Emotional Challenges
Discussing the restart, DJ Pretty Play shared the financial and emotional pressure of beginning again, emphasizing the expenses involved in paying the production team and maintaining the setup for another week.
“It almost broke me because I thought about the money, the expenses to pay the production team all over again. But when you are determined to do something and really want to do it, you will do it no matter the challenges and setback.”
Physical Toll of the Marathon
Following the successful conclusion of the marathon, DJ Pretty Play revealed how the long hours affected her health:
“My body is still healing. I’ve been through a lot of stress and long hours… I’m taking it one step at a time. The swelling has gone down, but I still feel sharp pain in my feet.”
Driven by Legacy and Determination
Despite the physical, emotional, and societal challenges, she emphasized her commitment to building a lasting legacy. Speaking about her motivation, she said:
“When you want to build a legacy, nothing stands in your way. I thought about my family, their support, and the belief they have in me… I knew I could not fail. Even when I made mistakes, I added more hours just to be safe.”
Support from Fans and Industry Figures
DJ Pretty Play highlighted the significance of the support she received from fellow DJs, public figures, and fans who attended the event. She noted that their presence and encouragement helped her stay motivated despite the physical and emotional challenges of performing for over 300 hours.
She acknowledged the effort it took for people to show up and support her, emphasizing how much their encouragement meant during such an intense undertaking.
Future Plans: Building a DJ Academy
Following the marathon, DJ Pretty Play spoke about her vision for the future of her career and the broader DJ industry. She explained that she plans to move beyond performing and focus on developing the business side of DJing.
“The next step is that I don’t just want to be a regular DJ because I want to take my DJing into the business aspect. I am travelling to get equipment because I want to open a DJ academy for people to train them into DJing.”
