Republic of Ireland pulled off a major upset on Thursday by defeating Portugal 2-0. The match was played at the Aviva Stadium.

The hosts took the lead in the 17th minute when Troy Parrott converted a well-placed header from Liam Scales’ cross. Ireland doubled the advantage just before half-time, with Parrott again finding the net.

The night turned darker for Portugal when captain Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in the 61st minute.

The 40-year-old received a yellow card for elbowing Ireland defender Dara O’Shea, which a VAR review upgraded to a red. This is the first time Ronaldo has been sent off in his 226-cap international career.

Ireland’s manager Heimir Hallgrimsson described the result as one of the biggest nights in his tenure, but cautioned: “It’s OK to smile and enjoy this game, but it’s only half-time.” The win keeps Ireland within reach of the playoff spots.

Portugal, despite the defeat, still lead Group F with ten points and remain in a strong position to qualify automatically. A draw against Armenia would virtually secure their place in the finals. Meanwhile, Ireland must win their final group match against Hungary to keep their campaign alive.
