Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has been named the 2025 African Player of the Year by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first defender to win the honour in 52 years.
Hakimi clinched the award ahead of finalists Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen. This comes after an outstanding season with PSG in which he helped secure a Champions League title, Ligue 1, Coupe de France and the UEFA Super Cup.
At the award ceremony in Rabat, Hakimi said: “It is really a proud moment for me to win this prestigious award. This trophy is not just for me, but all the strong men and women who have dreams of being a footballer in Africa.”
His win also marks a landmark for Morocco as Hakimi is the first Moroccan to claim the honour since Mustapha Hadji in 1998.
