Chelsea have named Liam Rosenior as their new head coach following the dismissal of Enzo Maresca last week. The 41-year-old has signed a long-term contract running until 2032.
Long-Term Appointment
Rosenior becomes the fourth permanent head coach since Chelsea’s takeover by the Todd Boehly-led consortium in 2022. The club has opted for continuity and youth-focused leadership with a lengthy deal.
Strasbourg Success
He arrives from Ligue 1 side Racing Strasbourg, where he guided the club to a seventh-place finish and European qualification last season. “I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed head coach of Chelsea Football Club,” Rosenior said. “This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies.”
Despite last season’s success, Rosenior leaves Strasbourg during a dip in form. His side failed to win their last five league matches and managed just two victories from their previous ten games.
Coaching Background
A London native, Rosenior enjoyed a solid playing career with Fulham, Hull City, and Brighton. He later moved into coaching, serving as assistant to Wayne Rooney at Derby County before managing Hull City in the Championship. He joined Strasbourg in July 2024, earning praise from Rooney, who described him as “as good a coach as I’ve ever worked with.”
Looking Ahead
Rosenior’s move was facilitated by Chelsea and Strasbourg sharing ownership under BlueCo. His work with young players, including Chelsea loanee Andrey Santos, further boosted his reputation. “He’s a great coach. I love working with him,” Santos said.
Rosenior is expected to officially begin his Chelsea tenure on Saturday away at Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup. Under-21s coach Calum McFarlane will take charge of Wednesday’s Premier League trip to Fulham.
