Carlos Alcaraz Completes Career Grand Slam at Australian Open

Carlos Alcaraz won the Australian Open final on Sunday to become the youngest man in history to complete a career Grand Slam. The Spaniard defeated Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, denying the Serb a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic Takes Early Control

The final began with Djokovic asserting control, using his experience and precision to take the opening set comfortably. Alcaraz initially struggled to match the Serb’s depth and variety.

Momentum Shifts in Second and Third Sets

Momentum swung early in the second set as Alcaraz’s baseline rhythm improved sharply. The 22-year-old grew in confidence, dictating rallies and gradually turning the match in his favour.

Composed Finish Under Pressure

Alcaraz maintained his composure during a tense fourth set, surviving heavy pressure as Djokovic fought to extend the contest. At 5-5, the Spaniard forced errors from the veteran before converting the championship point.

He collapsed onto the Rod Laver Arena court in celebration after sealing his first Melbourne crown.

Post-Match Reactions

“I stayed mentally strong, trying to be solid, and I changed a little bit tactically,” Alcaraz said. “That gave me a lot of calm and trust.”

Djokovic showed trademark sportsmanship by climbing over the net to embrace Alcaraz moments after the match. He praised his opponent, saying:

“The work you have been doing is historic; legendary.”

With a smile, Djokovic added:

“You’re still young, so I’m sure we will be seeing each other many more times over the years.”

“I didn’t think I’d be standing at the closing ceremony of a Grand Slam once again,” Djokovic told the crowd. Hinting at possible retirement, he added: “Who knows what happens tomorrow, never mind the next six or 12 months, but it has been a great ride.”

Historic Achievement

The victory makes Alcaraz only the ninth man to win all four Grand Slam titles and the first since Djokovic in 2016.
