CAN Condemns Ini Edo’s “A Very Dirty Christmas” Movie Title

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly criticised the title of Nollywood actress Ini Edo’s newly released film, A Very Dirty Christmas, describing it as offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith.

Why CAN Is Criticising the Movie Title

In a statement issued on December 17, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh expressed concern over the use of the word “dirty” in association with Christmas, a season Christians regard as sacred.

The Christian Association of Nigeria is deeply troubled by the title of the movie, ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’, which it considers offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith,” the statement read.

The Spiritual Significance of Christmas

Archbishop Okoh stressed that Christmas symbolises purity, peace, love, and redemption, marking the birth of Jesus Christ. He argued that linking the holy celebration with the word “dirty” diminishes its spiritual meaning.

Linking such a holy celebration with the word ‘dirty’ reduces a solemn religious observance to something crude and sensational,” he added.

Calls for Action From Ini Edo and Nollywood Stakeholders

CAN called for a reconsideration of the title and a public apology from the producers and urged Ini Edo specifically to address the concerns.

In this regard, CAN calls on the producer, Ini Edo, to show sensitivity and address the concerns raised by the Christian community.

The body also questioned the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) for approving the title and appealed to Nollywood stakeholders to handle religious themes responsibly.

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

The criticism has sparked reactions on social media, particularly on X, where some users mocked and dismissed CAN’s concerns.

Several commentators accused the association of misplaced priorities, pointing to its perceived silence on issues such as the killings and persecution of Christians in parts of northern Nigeria.

Ini Edo Yet to Respond

As of the time of reporting, Ini Edo has not publicly responded to CAN’s criticism.

The movie, directed by Akay Mason and produced by Ini Edo, premiered in cinemas nationwide on December 16, 2025, and centres on a family reunion disrupted by secrets and unresolved trauma during the Christmas season.
