The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed Samuel Eto’o Fils a four-match ban and a $20,000 fine for misconduct during the 2026 AFCON quarter-finals.
Incident in Rabat
The sanction relates to Cameroon’s 2–0 defeat to hosts Morocco in Rabat. CAF stated that Eto’o, a former Cameroon captain and current football administrator, was seen making angry gestures at refereeing decisions during the match.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe was present at the game.
Part of Wider CAF Investigation
Eto’o’s punishment comes as part of a broader CAF investigation into what the governing body described as “violent confrontations and unacceptable behaviour” involving players and officials during the quarter-final stage.
FECAFOOT Plans Appeal
Cameroon’s football federation, FECAFOOT, has rejected the ruling and confirmed plans to appeal the sanction. The federation questioned the fairness of the disciplinary process, stating that the decision “raises serious reservations about the fundamental requirements of a fair trial.”
