The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expanded the Africa Cup of Nations from 24 to 28 teams.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe described the move as a major step toward elevating African football and providing more nations the opportunity to compete at the highest level.
Motsepe Explains Expansion
Motsepe said the decision would encourage African players across the world to return and participate in continental football.
“This is about our commitment to world-class football, bringing together the best African players from across the globe to compete on the continent,” he stated.
However, CAF has not yet disclosed details on the new format or qualification structure.
2027 AFCON to Retain Current Format
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will maintain the existing 24-team format.
CAF also confirmed that a separate tournament will take place in 2028, after which AFCON will transition to a four-year cycle to align with other major international competitions.
Introduction of African Nations League
CAF announced plans for a new African Nations League set to begin in 2029.
The tournament will run annually, with a 16-team final competition staged every two years.
Motsepe emphasised the importance of consistent and competitive fixtures, particularly for regions like East Africa with strong potential for football development.
“We have to stop this situation where African fixtures are not predictable, consistent and reliable,” he said.
Governance Changes Within CAF
The reforms follow internal restructuring within CAF, including the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba after controversy surrounding the recent AFCON final.
