The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into violent incidents that followed two Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final matches, involving Morocco vs Cameroon and Nigeria vs Algeria.
Tensions Boil Over After Matches
Scenes of unrest followed Morocco’s quarter-final win over Cameroon in Rabat on Friday, with further flashpoints reported after Nigeria’s 2-0 victory against Algeria in Agadir on Saturday. In both matches, players from opposing teams were involved in heated post-match confrontations on the pitch.
Referee And Media Incidents
Footage circulating on social media appeared to show Algerian players chasing the referee down the tunnel after their defeat. Reports also emerged of scuffles involving journalists from different countries in the mixed zone, adding to concerns over post-match security and conduct.
CAF Statement And Investigation
The governing body said in a statement,
CAF has collected recent match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials and has opened an investigation.
The matters have been referred to the Disciplinary Board for investigation, with appropriate action to be taken if those involved are found guilty.
CAF stressed that it “strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers,” and warned that sanctions would follow if misconduct is established.
Fans’ and Federation’s Response
Further disorder was reported outside the stadium in Agadir, where Algerian supporters clashed with security personnel after the loss. On Monday, the Algerian Football Federation confirmed it had submitted a formal complaint to CAF regarding the performance of Senegalese referee Issa Sy, claiming that decisions during the match “damaged the credibility of African refereeing.”
CAF is expected to announce disciplinary outcomes once its investigation is concluded
