Bankulli Warns Against “Fast-Track” Music Careers, Praises Tiwa Savage’s Longevity

Music executive Bankulli has cautioned aspiring artistes against treating the music industry as a shortcut to fame or wealth.

Success in Music Requires Patience and Skill

In an interview with HipTV, he stressed that becoming a musician requires patience, skill, and dedication, not just a desire for instant recognition.

He said:

“You cannot just wake up from your sleep and say you are a musician.”

Warning Against Chasing Fame

Bankulli pointed out that some emerging artistes attempt to mimic established acts like Portable without understanding the discipline behind the craft.

He said:

“You might do it because you want people to know you, to make money, or to fly a private jet. But before they reach that jet, they crash in their career.”

He also highlighted the reality that some artistes attempt music for a few months, then struggle to produce anything meaningful, showing that success in the industry is not immediate.

Tiwa Savage’s Longevity as an Example

Bankulli contrasted this with the career of Tiwa Savage, which has spanned more than two decades.

He attributed her longevity to a combination of talent, strategic branding, consistent effort, and being surrounded by a team of knowledgeable people.

He said:

“It means there is something in her hidden mindset that allows her to continue bringing dynamism to her work.”

The Importance of Knowledge and Collaboration

Bankulli urged artistes to continuously seek knowledge about both what they know and what they do not.

For him, understanding the craft and surrounding oneself with smart collaborators is just as important as natural talent when building a lasting music career.

Bankulli’s Career in the Global Music Industry

With over 20 years of experience, Bankulli is a music executive, manager, singer, and songwriter. He is the founder of Bankulli Entertainment and has worked with several top Nigerian artistes.

He has also collaborated with international stars, contributing to The Lion King: The Gift by Beyoncé.

His credits also include work on Watch the Throne and Yeezus by Kanye West.

Bankulli also played a role in guiding the successful career of D’banj following the end of the Mo’ Hits Records era.
