Atletico Madrid produced a devastating first-half display to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 on Tuesday in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.
Difficult Night for Tottenham Goalkeeper
Tottenham’s 22-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky endured a difficult night in only his third appearance of the season.
Two costly errors helped Atletico race into a commanding lead. This prompted manager Igor Tudor to substitute him in the 17th minute after the Spanish side had already scored three goals.
Atletico’s First-Half Dominance
Marcos Llorente opened the scoring after six minutes when Kinsky slipped while attempting to play out from the back.
Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead in the 14th minute after Micky van de Ven also lost his footing.
A minute later, Julian Alvarez walked the ball into an empty net following another mistake from the goalkeeper.
Defender Robin Le Normand added a fourth from a rebound after Griezmann’s free kick.
However, Pedro Porro pulled one back for Spurs in the 26th minute.
Alvarez Adds Another After the Break
Atletico continued their rout in the second half as Alvarez raced clear from inside his own half to score the hosts’ fifth goal in the 55th minute.
Tottenham reduced the deficit again when Dominic Solanke capitalised on a mistake from Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak to make it 5-2 late in the match.
Atletico Remain Cautious
Despite the commanding lead, Alvarez insisted the Spanish side would remain cautious ahead of the second leg.
“We’re very happy with the win and the three-goal lead, but there are still 90 minutes left to play on their home turf,” he told reporters.
“We know what this competition is like. Every detail counts, it’s not going to be easy, but we want to be in the quarter-finals.”
