Aston Villa claimed a comfortable 2-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League on Thursday night. The home side controlled much of the game at Villa Park and showed composure from start to finish.
The first half was tight, with Maccabi defending deep and Villa pushing forward. The breakthrough came just before half-time when Ian Maatsen finished neatly from a tight angle at the 45th minute.
After the restart, Villa increased the tempo and continued to press high. Their pressure paid off when Ezri Konsa was brought down inside the box. Donyell Malen stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to double the lead at the 59th minute.
Maccabi Tel Aviv struggled to create chances throughout the game. Their few attacks were quickly broken down by Villa’s solid defence. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez had little to do, as Villa maintained control in all areas of the pitch.
The match was briefly overshadowed by protests outside the stadium. Demonstrations related to the Israel–Palestine conflict took place before kick-off, with local police confirming a few arrests. However, the atmosphere inside the ground remained largely focused on football.
Following police advice, Aston Villa initially announced that away fans would not be permitted, prompting Maccabi Tel Aviv to decline ticket allocations for their supporters.
Police had said that the ban on Maccabi fans was imposed because of “significant levels of hooliganism” within the club’s fan base, which posed safety risks around the match, not due to threats against Israeli supporters.
