Arsenal stars Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke have pulled out of the England squad ahead of Tuesday’s friendly match against Japan. The decision followed medical assessments which showed they were carrying injuries that could worsen if they played. England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed the players were eager to feature but said medical assessments showed playing posed a significant risk.
Medical Assessments Prompt Withdrawal
Rice and Saka attended England’s 1-1 draw against Uruguay on Friday but watched from the stands after joining the squad later than most teammates to allow recovery. Tuchel explained the reasoning behind their exit.
“They joined, had a medical assessment, wanted desperately to play, to just get the narrative straight. Wanted desperately to be involved,” Tuchel told reporters.
“The risk for making it worse was just way too big. They were both clearly in discomfort when we did the medical assessment, so it made absolutely no sense that they stayed,” he said.
Madueke Returns as Injury List Grows
Madueke returned to Arsenal on Saturday making it a total of ten Gunners players to pull out of international duty. The decision highlights the delicate balance between club commitments and national duties, though Tuchel stressed the importance of player welfare.
“It helps them go back to clubs and perform. We want them to perform in their clubs, but it is also our last camp before America, so we want to reconnect to our principles. I’m not upset or angry with the players. I got the feeling that everyone was desperate to come. Some of the injured players even stayed to do their treatment here, that shows they want to be around the group,” he added.
More Absentees for England Squad
Other players missing from the England squad include Manchester City defender John Stones, sidelined with a calf problem, and Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, who experienced “more discomfort than a big injury,” according to Tuchel.
Focus Remains on World Cup Preparations
Even with a depleted squad, Tuchel remains confident in the preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
