The driver involved in the fatal road accident that injured boxing star Anthony Joshua has been charged to court following the crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway last month.

Court Proceedings

Forty-six-year-old Kayode Adeniyi was arraigned before a Sagamu Magistrate Court on four counts, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid licence. The case was adjourned to January 20, with bail set at ₦5 million.

The Incident and Investigation Findings

The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, when the Lexus SUV Joshua was travelling in collided with a stationary truck. Joshua sustained minor injuries, but two members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, died at the scene.

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps said preliminary investigations indicated overspeeding and an unlawful overtaking manoeuvre before the crash. Joshua was taken to the hospital for checks and discharged days later.

Aftermath And Reactions

The tragedy drew widespread sympathy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, and the British envoy expressed condolences, while the incident sparked public debate over emergency response systems in Nigeria.

The remains of the two victims were repatriated to the United Kingdom on January 2, 2026. A sombre Joshua was present at the airport ceremony as the coffins were flown out for burial in England.
