Akon has formally opposed spousal support in the ongoing dissolution of his marriage to Tomeka Thiam. The 52-year-old musician, legally known as Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, submitted his legal response in Los Angeles Superior Court on November 14, 2025.
Ms. Thiam initiated divorce proceedings on September 8, 2025, citing irreconcilable differences, just days before the couple’s 29th wedding anniversary. The pair married in 1996.
In the filing, the artiste’s legal team formally requested the court to terminate any financial support to his estranged wife: “terminate the ability to award spousal support to petitioner, Tomeka Thiam.”
Akon requested joint physical and legal custody of their 17-year-old child. Ms. Thiam, in her petition, had requested sole physical custody with shared legal custody. Court records confirm both parties agreed to waive spousal support for Akon himself. The couple shares at least four children, including sons Aliaune ‘Ali’ Thiam and Jhavor Thiam, and daughter Alianna Thiam.
