Akiin Shuga Memorial- Nigeria Celebrates Icon’s Life And Legacy

Nigerians gathered to honour the life and legacy of one of the country’s most iconic live band leaders on November 25, 2025. Akiin Shuga, whose music and vision transformed the live entertainment industry, was fondly remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and many others who had the privilege of his acquaintance.

The Five Palms Event Centre in Oniru, Lekki, was filled with music, nostalgia, and heartfelt tributes as admirers gathered to celebrate the life of a man who shaped the Nigerian live band scene for over three decades.

Veteran comedian and close friend Tee A, Darey Art Alade, Tunde Adewale, Pastor Femi Oludare, the deceased brother, and other dignitaries shared reflections on Akiin’s kindness, creativity, and passion.

Renowned producer Cobhams Asuquo contributed a moving virtual musical tribute, which captured the essence of Akiin’s artistry.

Akiin Shuga’s band honoured him with the iconic Five Star General Salutation, a performance that evoked memories of the magic he brought to every stage.

His secondary school classmates spoke about his early leadership and resilience, while his manager, Jerry Odeh, reflected on Akiin’s visionary approach and enduring influence.

Attendees described him as a unifier, a mentor, and a man whose humility and generosity left a lasting impact. Though his children could not attend in person, they joined virtually and shared heartfelt words.

He founded and led the Shuga Band for over thirty years, recording music produced by Cobhams Asuquo, releasing the album Shuga Coated, and mentoring young Nigerian artistes.

A distinguished alumnus of Federal Government College, Enugu, and Berklee College of Music, Boston, Akiin also served as a Rotary International Celebrity Polio Ambassador and a Paul Harris Fellow, helping Nigeria achieve polio-free status in 2009.

Beyond music, he founded the Shuga Limb Foundation to empower physically challenged and underserved communities.

His accolades include being named Ambassador of Music by the Association of Nigerian Musicologists, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the City People Music Awards, and being recognized on the 2024 Top 60 Power List by the Association of Professional Party Organizers and Event Managers of Nigeria.

Akiin Shuga is survived by his wife, Maria Tofowomo, his children, Adebola and Oludara, and his mother.
