Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a 15-year career with the Nigerian national team.
Musa Announces Retirement
The 33-year-old confirmed his decision on Wednesday via X, reflecting on a journey that began when he received his first national team call-up as a teenager. He recalled an intense early phase of his career, revealing that he was called up simultaneously to the U-20, U-23, and senior national teams.
After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football. Wearing the green and white meant everything to me,” Musa wrote.
International Records and Achievements
He retires as Nigeria’s most capped player, with 111 international appearances, describing the milestone as a deep honour and a reminder of the responsibility that came with representing the country. One of the defining moments of his international career was winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles.
At the FIFA World Cup, Musa set historic records for Nigeria as he became the first Nigerian to score more than once in a single World Cup match after netting twice against Argentina in 2014. He repeated the feat against Iceland in 2018, becoming the first Nigerian to score in two different World Cups.
Tributes and Life After Football
He paid tribute to his teammates, coaches, backroom staff and football administrators, while also thanking Nigerian fans at home and abroad for their love and support.
In July 2025, Musa was appointed General Manager of Kano Pillars FC by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
