Afro-Fuji Star Destiny Boy Passes Away At 22

Afro-Fuji singer Destiny Boy, born Afeez Adeshina, has passed away at the age of 22. News of his death emerged on social media on 18 January 2026.

The singer is survived by his wife, Iremide, and their young son, who was born in November 2024.

Early Career and Rise to Fame

Destiny Boy first gained attention in Lagos as a backup dancer, working with several artistes, including Fuji legend Pasuma, before fully transitioning into music.

He became known for blending Afro-Fuji and street-pop sounds, carving out a unique identity in Nigeria’s street music scene. His breakthrough came in 2019 with a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song “If”, which showcased his distinctive voice and quickly gained popularity.

Musical Career and Releases

Following his rise, Destiny Boy went on to reinterpret songs by Nigerian stars such as Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor, while also releasing original singles, including:

  • Lamba
  • One Transaction
  • Gbese
  • Billion Dollar
  • Mio Gbonkankan
  • Lowkey

Despite his growing popularity, Destiny Boy had not released a full studio album and had not received any major awards or nominations before his untimely death.

Circumstances Surrounding His Death

Details surrounding Destiny Boy’s death remain unclear. An emotional video circulating online shows a close associate claiming the singer had an underlying health issue and suddenly fell ill before being rushed to the hospital, where he later passed away.

The associate described the loss as painful and attributed it to God’s will.

Industry Reactions and Questions

So far, reactions from fellow artistes have been limited. Ruger and Small Doctor are the only notable voices to publicly comment on the tragedy.

On his X (formerly Twitter) account, Ruger questioned the lack of clarity surrounding Destiny Boy’s death, writing:

“What caused his death? No autopsy, nothing. We’re just expected to accept that he’s gone.”

Singer Small Doctor also reacted on Instagram, posting a single word:

“Scared.”
