Nigeria booked a convincing place in the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals after cruising to a 4-0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16. The Super Eagles were dominant throughout, ending Mozambique’s fairytale run in their first-ever knockout appearance.
Match Highlight
Nigeria set the tone early, pressing aggressively and moving the ball with purpose. Mozambique struggled to cope with the Eagles’ pace and physicality as chances arrived in waves. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman finished calmly from Akor Adams’ pass.
Victor Osimhen doubled the lead five minutes later with a composed finish. He struck again shortly after halftime, tapping in Lookman’s low cross from close range to make it 3-0. Akor Adams completed the rout in the 75th minute as Nigeria registered eight shots on target, while Mozambique failed to test Stanley Nwabali.
Wilfred Ndidi anchored midfield alongside Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, dictating play with ease. At the back, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi kept things watertight as Nigeria cruised home
Post-Match Controversy
Despite the emphatic win, attention later shifted to Victor Osimhen’s angry exchange with Ademola Lookman in the 63rd minute. The striker was visibly upset after Lookman chose to shoot instead of squaring the ball. Osimhen had to be pulled away by Ndidi and was heard shouting, “No try am again.”
Substituted minutes later, Osimhen was booed by sections of the crowd, with fans on social media criticising his reaction.
Nigeria will now face the winners of the last-16 clash between Algeria and DR Congo as they continue their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
