Defending champions Ivory Coast booked their place in the AFCON quarter-finals with a dominant 3–0 win over Burkina Faso on Tuesday. Amad Diallo starred with a goal and an assist as the Ivorians set up a blockbuster clash with Egypt in Agadir on Saturday.
Match Highlight
Ivory Coast took control in the 20th minute through Diallo. The winger danced past three defenders before lifting a clever finish over goalkeeper Hervé Koffi, with a slight deflection helping the ball on its way. It was a deserved opener after a bright start.
The lead was doubled 12 minutes later. Diallo’s low cross from the right was intelligently left by Franck Kessié, allowing Yan Diomandé to side-foot home from the edge of the box. Burkina Faso struggled to live with the Ivory Coast’s tempo and movement.
Burkina Faso’s best chance came when Dango Ouattara struck the post from a tight angle. It proved a rare moment of danger as Emerse Faé’s side dominated possession and territory for long spells.
Ivory Coast wrapped up the win in the 87th minute. Teenager Bazoumana Touré broke free on the left and surprised Koffi with a sharp finish at the near post, scoring his second goal of the tournament.
Player Reaction
There’s an understanding between us on the pitch that makes things easier. No one is trying to be the hero.”
Diallo said.
Diallo now has three goals and one assist in the tournament as the Ivory Coast prepares to face seven-time champions Egypt in a highly anticipated quarter-final.
