Ghana’s Black Stars were thrown into uncertainty after Otto Addo was dismissed as head coach following a 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany in Stuttgart.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed a new technical direction will be announced soon, leaving the team without a manager as the 2026 World Cup approaches.
Match Recap: Germany Edge Ghana
Germany took an early lead when Kai Havertz converted a stoppage-time penalty in the first half.
Ghana pressed after the interval, and substitute Abdul Fatawu Issahaku equalised with a precise finish following a measured assist from Derrick Köhn.
The Black Stars looked to seize momentum, but Germany’s Deniz Undav snatched a late winner, lobbing the ball delicately over the Ghana goalkeeper to secure a 2-1 victory.
Inconsistent Results Mark Second Stint
Addo’s second stint had begun with promise, highlighted by an unbeaten World Cup qualification run. However, inconsistencies followed, with eight wins, five draws, and nine defeats across 22 matches.
The team also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in two decades. Critics highlighted a lack of cohesion and consistency, particularly against stronger opposition, raising concerns over tactical clarity and player utilisation.
Backroom Changes and Exit Details
The Ghana Football Association had earlier expanded Addo’s backroom staff to 21 members in an effort to improve performance.
Addo, 50, leaves after 746 days in charge during his second spell. He previously served as caretaker during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when Ghana exited at the group stage.
World Cup Challenge Ahead
The Black Stars will open their World Cup campaign against Panama before facing England and Croatia in Group L.
With preparation time shrinking, the Ghana Football Association is prioritising the appointment of a coach capable of restoring stability, instilling tactical clarity, and unlocking the full potential of the squad.
