Concerns over the rising cost of living in Nigeria have intensified following the recent increases in petrol prices. The hike is generally acknowledged to be driven by the US-Israel vs Iran war.
The development has triggered reactions from citizens, with many highlighting its impact on transportation, goods, and daily expenses.
Street Reactions From Nigerians
To understand how Nigerians are coping, HipTV interviewed everyday Nigerians on the streets of Nigeria. Nigerians expressed frustration over the situation.
One respondent said:
“I don’t think it’s something we are supposed to be suffering as an oil-producing nation… it’s not fair for average Nigerians.”
Calls for Regulation and Investment
Speaking on possible solutions, the same respondent added:
“They should regulate the price and invest that money into building more refineries in Nigeria.”
Impact on Transportation and Daily Life
Another participant highlighted the stress caused by the increase, saying:
“I have my ride at home, but because of fuel, I take maruwa and okada… it’s very stressful.”
On government intervention, the respondent stated:
“The government should find a faster solution so it can be easy for us moving here and there.”
Rising Prices Across Goods and Services
Reacting to the broader impact, a respondent noted:
“It is affecting everybody… the price of goods has increased.”
Another respondent described the rise in transport fares, saying:
“The fuel price is alarming like for instance now from Allen to Opebi we used to enter it 200 but now we are entering it 300.”
A further respondent added:
“Fuel price has increased and everything has gone up, especially transportation… the government should reduce the price drastically.”
Calls for Urgent Government Action
With inflation rising and living costs increasing, many Nigerians are calling on authorities to take urgent steps to ease the burden and stabilize fuel prices.
