Kafayat Shafau has highlighted the evolving landscape of dance in Nigeria, emphasising expression, adaptability, and value creation within the industry.
Speaking during an interview with HipTV, Kaffy described dance as an innate form of expression that extends beyond physical movement.
Dance as a Form of Expression
“We are expressive. We create, we are like God,” she said, explaining that dancers possess limitless creative potential.
According to her, excellence in dance comes from understanding that a single skill can create multiple opportunities.
“It doesn’t mean that you have to be many things, but your one thing can birth many things,” she added, referencing the biblical parable of talents to explain growth and impact.
Industry Growth and Recognition
Kaffy also addressed the structural development of the industry, noting a significant shift in how dancers are valued.
“Before, they don’t pay dancers. Now they do pay dancers,” she said, highlighting improved recognition and financial reward.
She cited groups such as Team Greatness, which has performed on tour with Afrobeats star Asake, as examples of the industry’s expansion.
Expanding Opportunities for Dancers
Kaffy explained that dancers are now diversifying into fields such as fitness and education.
“As long as you move, you can move emotionally, psychologically, financially,” she noted.
Challenges and Future Outlook
Despite the progress, Kaffy acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly around financial sustainability.
“We cannot solve all the challenges overnight,” she said, pointing to the gradual development of the industry.
She concluded by encouraging young dancers to evolve and think beyond limitations.
“Expand your mind.”
Kaffy’s Legacy in Dance
Kaffy gained global recognition after setting a Guinness World Records for the longest dance party in 2006.
She founded the Imagnito Dance Company, where she has trained and mentored a new generation of dancers.
Throughout her career, she has worked with top Nigerian artistes including P-Square, D’banj, 2Baba, and Olamide.
