Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage was on full display as creatives, enthusiasts and fashion lovers gathered for a Guinness World Records attempt for the most photos of people wearing Adire.
The event took place at the Oriental Hotel Lagos waterfront in Victoria Island Lagos on March 14, 2026, with participants arriving in diverse contemporary and traditional Adire styles.
How the Record Attempt Worked
Participants were given number tags and had their photographs taken. The images were uploaded to the Ajoyo website and prepared for posting on Instagram.
Participants scanned a barcode to access their photos on the Ajoyo website before posting them on Instagram at exactly 2:30 PM to be counted toward the record attempt.
Participants Celebrate the Historic Moment
Speaking about the experience, Bade Adegoroye expressed excitement at being part of the historic moment.
“I feel elated to be part of history of setting a Guinness World Record for most people wearing Adire.”
He also encouraged Nigerians to remain positive despite economic challenges.
“Nigerians, irrespective of the situation of the country, create your own fun, enjoy yourself and don’t allow economic situation to weigh you down.”
Promoting Nigerian Culture Globally
Event host Bukunmi Preacher noted that the initiative would showcase Nigerian culture to a global audience.
“I believe this event will go beyond Nigerian fashion itself. It’s showcasing Nigeria to the world, we’re putting Nigeria on the market.”
Also speaking at the event, Olori Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi praised the celebration of Adire and urged Nigerians to embrace their cultural heritage.
“It means our culture and heritage is no more going into extinction. Nigerians, wherever you are, always embrace our culture.”
Months of Planning Behind the Event
According to organiser Lanre Ogundare, the record attempt required months of preparation.
“It was just like a dream. It’s been eight months of planning and working to make this happen.”
He added that the team intends to pursue additional record attempts celebrating Nigerian fabrics.
“We will still go to Aso-Oke, Ankara and everything that is Nigerian. Watch out because this is the start of it.”
Organisers Confirm Target Was Achieved
Co-organiser Ruby Agwu encouraged Nigerians to promote their country and its cultural achievements.
“Nigerians, sell Nigeria. There are so many amazing things happening in Nigeria that people don’t know about because it’s not publicised enough.”
She also thanked the event sponsors, including the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, HipTV, and Seaman’s Schnapps.
Agwu confirmed that the organisers surpassed their target.
“I am proud of the 703 people who posted at the right time. We needed a cutoff of 500 and we have over 500.”
Celebration of Nigerian Identity
The lively atmosphere, performances and strong participation highlighted Nigerian identity and culture, while encouraging continued appreciation of local fabrics such as Adire.
