Ajoyo NG is set to attempt a Guinness World Records title for the Most Photos of People Wearing Adire Patterned Clothing.
The world record attempt will take place on Saturday, 14 March 2026 at the Oriental Hotel Waterfront. The goal is to photograph 2,000 people wearing Adire within one hour.
Celebrating the Heritage of Adire
Adire is a traditional Nigerian textile known for its distinctive patterned designs created through a resist-dyeing technique.
The fabric originates from the Yoruba region, where women historically developed the craft into a thriving cultural industry. The production process involves tying, stitching, or applying starch paste to sections of cotton fabric to resist dye.
Inspiration Behind the Record Attempt
In an interview with HipTV, Ruby Agwu, musician, actress, and co-founder of Ajoyo NG, explained that the Guinness World Record attempt is inspired by the need to preserve Nigeria’s cultural history and properly recognise the origins of Adire.
She said:
“Ajoyo is very passionate about really telling the true story of Nigerian history, and we believe that a lot of innovations that belong to Nigeria have been missing in translation because we don’t have the history to tell that story. We don’t have any news about the great things that we’ve created.”
Highlighting Adire’s Cultural Roots
Although Adire has gained popularity internationally, its roots in Abeokuta and Osogbo, along with the contributions of local women artisans, remain largely undocumented.
Agwu noted that the initiative will help place Nigerian culture in the global spotlight.
“We’re going to make Adire into a whole event by attempting a Guinness World Records record title.”
Connecting Tradition With Modern Platforms
Agwu emphasised that Adire represents an important symbol of Nigerian heritage.
She explained that combining the traditional fabric with modern digital platforms highlights the relevance of Nigerian history and creativity in the contemporary world, showcasing the nation’s cultural wealth to a global audience.
Growing Popularity Among Young Nigerians
Addressing the increasing embrace of Adire among younger Nigerians, Agwu said:
“All we’re doing is helping the world see that this is ours. This is something that we created. This was our innovation. The new generation is very pro-Nigerian based fashion. All we’re doing is taking it past Nigeria and into the world to say that this has become a sensation, and you best believe Nigeria started it.”
