Federico Valverde scored his first ever hat-trick as Real Madrid trounced Manchester City in their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie.
Madrid Punish City on the Counter
City began brightly but were repeatedly punished by Madrid’s pace on the counterattack.
Valverde opened the scoring in the 20th minute when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois released him with a long ball, allowing the Uruguayan to round Gianluigi Donnarumma before finishing.
Seven minutes later, Vinícius Júnior fed Valverde, who beat the offside trap and drilled home to double the lead.
Hat-Trick Completed Before Half-Time
Madrid struck again just before halftime when Brahim Díaz clipped a pass into Valverde’s path during another rapid break.
The midfielder flicked the ball over Marc Guehi and finished with a crisp volley to complete his hat-trick.
Courtois Stands Firm in Goal
City pushed forward after the break but struggled to break down Madrid’s defence.
Courtois produced key saves to deny Antoine Semenyo.
Madrid could have extended their lead when Vinícius won a penalty after being brought down by Donnarumma, but the goalkeeper redeemed himself by saving the Brazilian’s spot kick.
Valverde Reacts to Memorable Night
Valverde told reporters after the match:
“Incredible, one dreams of nights like this,”
“I really enjoyed myself today… I am pleased and happy, but above all, I am delighted with the team’s victory.”
The result leaves Manchester City facing a daunting challenge in the second leg in England next Tuesday.
