Yvonne Jegede and Susan Peters have addressed the expanding prominence of women in Nollywood.
Conversation Marking International Women’s Day
During an interview with HipTV, they highlighted women’s increasing representation both on screen and behind the camera.
Their remarks coincide with the observance of International Women’s Day on 8 March, which celebrates women’s achievements worldwide. International Women’s Day is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in all facets of human endeavour.
Yvonne Jegede on Women’s Growing Impact
Yvonne Jegede observed that women are gaining recognition in roles traditionally dominated by men, and their contributions are being formally acknowledged.
She said:
“Well it’s International Women’s Month. And I just want to say that it’s beautiful to know that we, especially women, are dominating the industry. Women are just doing so much and it is impressive to see that. We are not backing down any time and we are here to stay.”
Susan Peters on Women Behind the Camera
Susan Peters highlighted the growing participation of women in production, direction, and writing. She referenced her recent graduation from New York University, where she trained as a director, and explained her plans to contribute more actively behind the camera.
She said:
“Women are really dominating. Unlike before when we gave fewer ladies behind the scenes, now we have a lot of women behind the scenes and also in front of the camera. I am indeed glad (at) how far we’ve come with the resilience for women. We’re not taking the back seat. We are also trying to tell the world that yes, we can also do it, you know, the more the merrier, I believe”.
OJ Posharella on Women’s Unity
Entrepreneur, event host, and influencer OJ Posharella shared her thoughts on women supporting each other across industries. She described the occasion as a celebration of women’s achievements and collective strength.
She said:
“Women’s day is all about the unity of women and togetherness, when we come together, we shatter single. So for me, International Women’s Day means everything. It’s a celebration of my womanhood, sisterhood.”
Encouraging Collaboration and Growth
Posharella also spoke about the need for continued growth and collaboration among women in creative industries and beyond.
She said:
“I’d say for us around the globe, women in the creative industry, we are doing great things, and women are taking up roles. I mean, there are lots of new directors, women in different roles. I want to see more come together in the creative industry, in politics, wherever”.
Addressing Challenges and Equality
She also addressed the challenges women encounter in professional settings, including inclusivity and equality. She asserted that women are increasingly asserting themselves in leadership positions and contributing substantially across industries.
She added:
“Women face inclusivity, equality, I mean, I mean, to name a few, there’s so many challenges.”
