SZA has criticised artificial intelligence in music, warning that AI-generated songs and virtual performers are affecting Black artistes and cultural authenticity.
The Grammy-winning singer expressed feeling “at war because of AI” during an interview with i-D published on 6 March 2026, as AI-generated tracks increasingly appeared on streaming platforms and Billboard charts.
Concerns Over Cultural Representation
SZA accused AI of reproducing Black music in harmful ways, calling it: “weird, stereotypical struggle music.” She questioned why emerging artistes like Olivia Dean cannot collect streaming revenue when AI covers of their songs circulate widely.
She also warned that this trend could reduce earnings and opportunities for Black creatives.
Environmental Concerns About AI
In 2025, SZA raised concerns about AI’s environmental impact, highlighting the energy and water demands of data centres powering artificial intelligence.
She made these comments on her Instagram account in posts and Stories, pointing out that Black and Brown communities are disproportionately affected.
She stated:
“Hey I hate AI … people and children are dying from the harm n pollution AI energy centers are creating … PLEASE JUST GOOGLE ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM. AI doesn’t care if you live or die I promise. THERE IS A PRICE FOR CONVENIENCE AND BLACK AND BROWN [people] WILL PAY THE BRUNT OF IT EVERY-TIME.”
Focusing on Human Creativity
The singer explained that her response is to focus on human creativity in the studio, working on new music with live instrumentation.
She described sessions with a live band, where beats are created from scratch during freestyles, and contributions from Steve Lacy on an unspecified project.
She emphasised that this method preserves artistry and contrasts with AI’s mechanical reproduction of music.
Emphasising Authentic Artistic Expression
SZA said she is exploring a wide range of creative directions, ensuring her songs reflect personal experience and intellectual depth.
She stressed that AI cannot replicate the nuances of human expression, cultural knowledge, or lived experience that shape her songwriting.
