Real Madrid Investigate Fan Over Nazi Salute Incident

Real Madrid have launched an investigation after a supporter performed a Nazi salute before their Champions League victory over Benfica.

The incident occurred at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. Television cameras captured the fan making the fascist gesture before kickoff, and security staff swiftly identified and removed the individual from the 83,000-capacity stadium.

In a statement, Real Madrid confirmed disciplinary action had been initiated.

“Real Madrid condemns this type of gesture and expression that incites violence and hatred in sports and society,” the club said.

The club added that its disciplinary committee had been asked “to initiate an immediate expulsion procedure” against the supporter.

Match Result and Anti-Racism Message

The controversy unfolded on a night when Madrid secured a 2-1 win over Benfica, advancing to the Champions League last 16 with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Vinicius Junior scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute and received strong backing from home supporters. Before kickoff, fans displayed a banner reading “No to racism” in Spanish.

Racism Allegations in First Leg

The incident comes days after Vinicius alleged Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni racially abused him during the first leg in Lisbon.

The Brazilian forward informed the referee of the alleged abuse, leading to a 10-minute stoppage as Madrid players briefly left the pitch. UEFA later handed Prestianni a provisional one-match suspension, ruling him out of the return leg while a full investigation continues.

Symbolic Victory

Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouameni described the win as significant beyond the scoreline.

“This win was for everyone who stands against racism,” he said.

The incident and subsequent investigation highlight ongoing efforts within European football to confront racism and uphold standards of conduct both on and off the pitch.
