Galatasaray scored twice in extra time to eliminate 10-man Juventus and advance to the UEFA Champions League last 16 despite a 3-2 second-leg defeat on Wednesday.
The Turkish side progressed 7-5 on aggregate, surviving a dramatic comeback attempt in Turin and sealing qualification with late extra-time goals from Victor Osimhen and Baris Alper Yilmaz.
Juventus Fights Back with 10 Men
Trailing 5-2 from the first leg in Istanbul, Juventus delivered a spirited performance in front of their home supporters. Captain Manuel Locatelli converted a penalty eight minutes before halftime after a foul by Lucas Torreira to spark hope.
However, the hosts were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Lloyd Kelly was sent off, complicating their comeback mission.
Despite the setback, Juventus responded impressively. Federico Gatti scored from close range to level the aggregate score before Weston McKennie headed home late in regulation time to force extra time.
Extra-Time Decider
With momentum on their side, Juventus created several chances, but fatigue and missed opportunities proved costly.
Galatasaray regained control in extra time. Osimhen struck just before the interval of the additional period after being played through by Yilmaz.
As Juventus pushed forward in search of another comeback, Yilmaz sealed the tie with a late counter-attacking goal, ending the Italian side’s hopes. Galatasaray will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the next round.
Emotional Reaction
Locatelli praised his team’s effort despite the heartbreak.
“I feel like crying. We gave our heart and soul and these games remain in the heart,” he said.
Gatti echoed the sentiment, noting the team’s reaction with 10 men and acknowledging that the first-leg deficit ultimately proved decisive.
