Manchester United substitute Benjamin Sesko scored for the second straight game to secure a 1-0 Premier League victory at Everton on Monday.
The Slovenian forward struck in the 71st minute at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, sweeping home a first-time finish from Bryan Mbeumo’s pass after a counter-attack initiated by a cross from Matheus Cunha.
Tight Contest Decided by Fine Margins
The goal settled a contest with few clear chances. Everton nearly conceded early when James Tarkowski cleared Amad Diallo’s effort off the line.
Everton responded through Harrison Armstrong and Michael Keane, but United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made two sharp saves to preserve the clean sheet.
United Strengthen Top-Four Position
Victory moved United three points clear in fourth place on 48 points from 27 matches, ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool on 45.
Caretaker manager Michael Carrick has now won five and drawn one of his six games in charge, boosting the club’s Champions League qualification hopes.
Sesko said:
“It was really important for us to win this game. It was really difficult. We were fighting. They were fighting. It was a really 50-50 battle, but we managed it until the end and secured the win.”
He has now scored six goals in his last seven appearances, including a late equaliser against West Ham 13 days ago.
Everton’s Struggles Continue
Everton remain ninth and are without a win in their last seven home games in all competitions.
Manager David Moyes said:
“I’m not happy with the scoreline, that’s for sure. They got the one goal on the counter-attack, and we put in a great effort to try and get the goal back but just lacked the quality to make it count.”
Carrick praised his match-winner, adding that the clean sheet was just as important as the goal and describing Sesko as a player who will be key to the club for a long period.
