Alexis Mac Allister scored in the 97th minute to hand Liverpool a dramatic 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, sealing all three points after a largely uninspiring contest at Anfield.
After 90 minutes in which Liverpool struggled to create clear-cut chances, the Argentine midfielder rifled home a rebound deep into stoppage time to settle the match.
Forest Creates Better Chances
Nottingham Forest carved out the better opportunities for much of the game. Callum Hudson-Odoi was denied by Alisson, while Elliot Anderson squandered two promising openings.
Liverpool’s clearest earlier chance came in the 54th minute when Mohamed Salah’s header back across goal forced Stefan Ortega into a crucial save from Curtis Jones.
VAR Drama Before Decisive Goal
Mac Allister thought he had broken the deadlock in the second minute of added time when the ball deflected off him and into the net. However, VAR ruled the effort out for handball after it struck his elbow.
Moments later, he made amends, lashing home a loose ball to secure victory in Forest’s first league match under new manager Vitor Pereira.
Reactions And League Implications
“It was fine margins, we really struggled in the first half. We were the lucky ones, scoring in the extra time,” Liverpool manager Arne Slot said.
Mac Allister admitted the performance fell short of expectations:
“Mixed feelings. I love scoring, I love winning, but I don’t think we played very well. It’s always nice when you win.”
Liverpool move up to sixth on 45 points, level with Chelsea and Manchester United in the race for the top four. Forest remain 17th on 27 points, two points above the relegation zone.
