Bad Bunny Lands Lead Role In ‘Porto Rico’ Drama

Bad Bunny has secured his first leading role in the upcoming historical drama “Porto Rico”, placing him at the centre of a major production focused on Puerto Rico’s independence-era history. The film is directed by Residente, marking his feature directorial debut. It is described as a Caribbean western inspired by documented events surrounding resistance to colonial rule.

Story Inspired By Revolutionary History

The story follows José Maldonado Román, known as “Águila Blanca”, a revolutionary figure associated with early 20th-century uprisings tied to Puerto Rico’s political struggles. Porto Rico marks the first time Bad Bunny will carry a feature film as the lead actor.

Star-Studded Cast And Production Team

The cast also includes Viggo Mortensen, Javier Bardem, and Edward Norton. Filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, known for Birdman and The Revenant, serves as executive producer. Bad Bunny previously appeared in supporting roles in Bullet Train alongside Brad Pitt, as well as in “Caught Stealing” and “Happy Gilmore 2”. Production details, including principal photography dates and release plans, have not yet been confirmed.

Momentum Following Super Bowl Performance

Bad Bunny most recently headlined the 2026 Super Bowl LX halftime show at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Performing primarily in Spanish, he delivered one of the most-watched halftime audiences on record. The performance boosted streaming numbers, strengthened his Billboard chart presence, and generated widespread media attention, further elevating his profile ahead of his leading film role.
