Grammys To Honour Afrobeat Pioneer Fela Kuti

Fela Anikulapo Kuti will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy on 31 January 2026. The honour will be presented at the Special Merit Awards ceremony in Los Angeles during activities marking GRAMMY Week.

Fela Kuti, the creator of Afrobeat, remains one of Nigeria’s most internationally recognised cultural figures. His music combined African rhythms, jazz, funk, and highlife, producing a sound that reshaped popular music and carried strong political and social messages during Nigeria’s military eras.

Fela Kuti’s Musical Legacy

Across several decades, Fela released an extensive catalogue with Africa ’70 and later Egypt 80. Albums such as Zombie, Expensive Shit, Shakara, and Sorrow, Tears and Blood became reference points for Afrobeat and positioned Nigerian music firmly on the global stage.

His work influenced generations of musicians and established Afrobeat as a global genre rooted in African expression and social commentary.

Felabration And Continuing Global Recognition

Recent activity around Fela Kuti’s legacy continued through Felabration, which marked its 25th anniversary in Lagos in October 2025. The celebration included week-long events at the New Afrika Shrine.

Alongside this, an international Felabration also took place in Hull, United Kingdom, during Black History Month 2025. The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognises individuals whose recorded work has had a lasting influence, reflecting Afrobeat’s continued relevance in recorded music history.
