Italy secured a place in the Davis Cup final after Lorenzo Cobolli helped overturn a 2-0 deficit to beat Australia’s Holden Brooksby 3–6, 6–4, 7-6 (4) in the semi finals on Friday. The comeback sealed Italy’s 3–2 victory and sent the hosts through.
Starting with Australia in control after the opening singles, Cobolli stepped up when it mattered most. After losing the first set, he steadied his service game in the second and used his forehand to dominate the final set’s tiebreak.
The result means Italy extend their run to the Davis Cup final, where they will face Spain or a Germany from the tie in the opposite bracket.
Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt praised Cobolli’s resilience. “He found a way when his back was against the wall,” Hewitt said. Italy captain Filippo Volandri added: “We showed great team spirit and belief to come back like this.”
