UK-based Nigerian music group SHiiKANE continues to make waves as one of Africa’s leading all-female bands, blending artistry, family, and originality. The trio m made up of sisters Nkem, Ifeanyi Chukwu, and Uche say their decision to start making music together came naturally.
“We are sisters, and we decided to start making music together,” they shared.
Explaining the meaning behind their name, the group revealed that SHiiKANE was created by merging parts of their individual names as a creative symbol of unity and shared purpose.
Known for their distinctive Afro-Indie sound, SHiiKANE describe their music as Afrobeats made with any type of music mixed with alternative, rock, and hip-hop.
Reflecting on their growth since their early days in London, the sisters said their sound has evolved with time and cultural influence.
“In London, we made pop and R&B. But as Nigeria’s music scene began to expand, we infused different elements Afrofusion. We love music and try to bring all fusions into our sound. It reflects Nigeria’s chaotic but beautiful energy,” they explained.
When asked about their transition as female artists working in two different environments, SHiiKANE acknowledged the challenges but credited their sisterhood for keeping them grounded.
“It’s always difficult to be a female singer. As a group, we’ve faced trials and tribulations, but being sisters makes it easier to stick together through everything. We stay prayerful and support each other,” they said.
The group also paid tribute to their late mother, who they described as the fourth member of SHiiKANE.
“Our mummy used to call herself a member of SHiiKANE. Our record label is named after her. Her message to us was, ‘so what you have to do’ that’s how we live and make music. Some people may not understand our style, but we’re proud to do what we love and not follow the crowd.”
